On this day in 2000 the Stable Keeper at the villa of Silvio Berlusconi, Vittorio Mangano passed away from cancer in prison at the age of 59. His real job at the villa was a security guard, placed there to deter kidnappers from taking Berlusconi’s children.
Mangano was a member of the Porta Nuova crime family in the Sicilian Mafia, and refused to give away any information on Berlusconi.
His epitaph reads: “He refused to barter his dignity for freedom”
