Umberto's Clam House Escape Room
Joey Gallo's 43rd birthday, and you're carrying something you shouldn't be. Umberto's Clam House is one of the Five Families escape rooms: a 3D recreation of a real scene from mob history that you walk around as your own mobster, searching for evidence and cracking a four-digit padlock before the clock runs out. This guide covers the real story behind the room, what you'll find inside, and how to get out.

The real story
Joey Gallo was shot at Umberto's Clam House on his 43rd birthday. He had been out of prison for about a year.
The gunman walked past several witnesses on his way out of Umberto's. Nobody stopped him. Nobody gave a useful description.
Gallo liked to be seen as a cultured gangster. He had read widely in prison and mixed with actors and writers after his release.
Gallo served nearly ten years in prison before his release in 1971. He used the time to read and to build a reputation as an intellectual.
Several individuals present at Umberto's that night were never identified. The back exit through the kitchen provided a route that bypassed the police arriving on Mulberry Street.
Multiple people were stopped and questioned outside Umberto's in the minutes after the shooting. Those carrying incriminating items had no good explanation for their presence.
Setting the scene
It's just after midnight. Joey Gallo is celebrating his birthday at the table across from you — laughing, ordering clams, completely at ease.
Then the door opens. Two men walk in fast. The shots come before anyone can move.
Gallo is hit. The room erupts. Someone is screaming. You're on your feet before you know it.
You were here for a different reason tonight. You're carrying something you shouldn't be — a list of names, a payment schedule, nothing innocent. If the police find it on you when they arrive, you have a much bigger problem than being a witness.
Before you get inside, you make your own way there. Walk down Mulberry Street after midnight, past the caffè and the gelato shop, to Umberto's. A green arrow shows you the door.

Three rooms in one
Umberto's Clam House isn't one room, it's three, and you only see the next one once you've earned it. Each has three things to search. Search everything in the room you're in and a door unlocks, a glowing arrow shows you the way through, and the next part of the scene opens up. The clock keeps running the whole time: 5 minutes for all three.
The padlock code is spread across all three, so you can't escape from the dining room. Move fast in the first room: the last room is where people run out of time.
What you'll find in each room
There are 9 things to search in Umberto's Clam House, three in each room. 4 of them hide a digit of the padlock code, 2 are dead ends put there to waste your time, and the rest fill in the story. The wine bottle, the stack of menus and the gas range stay locked until you've found 3 clues. The clam crates, the ice chest and the Hester Street door stay locked until you've found 6 clues.
First room: The dining room

Second room: The kitchen

Third room: The delivery hall

Umberto's Clam House escape room walkthrough
- Take in the room. Drag to look around and walk with the stick or arrow keys. Question marks show everything you can search.
- Clear each room. Search all three things in the dining room and the way through to the kitchen unlocks. Clear that and you're into the delivery hall. Follow the glowing arrow to the next door.
- Find the four digits. Each piece of evidence that matters gives you one digit, and tells you which position it goes in. Stuck? The hints below point you to the right room, not the answer.
- Ignore the red herrings. Some items look important and aren't. Don't spend the clock on them.
- Open the padlock with the four digits in order, before the 5 minutes run out.
- Make the call. You'll choose how it ends: Burn the list in the kitchen and leave through the back onto Hester Street; Pocket the list and walk out the front before the police arrive; Drop the list in the chaos, stay as a witness, let them question you. Each ending tells you what really happened.
Hint: The dining room
One digit of the code is hidden in the dining room. Read everything you search there to the very last line.
Hint: The kitchen
Two digits of the code are hidden in the kitchen. Read everything you search there to the very last line.
Hint: The delivery hall
One digit of the code is hidden in the delivery hall. Read everything you search there to the very last line.
Tips for escaping
- Read each piece of evidence to the end: the digit is usually in the last line.
- If the clock's getting away from you, a hint costs 25 Mob Coins and an extra minute costs 50.
- Holding a drink or a cigar from the Social Club gives you 20 extra seconds in every room.
- On a phone, turn it sideways for a wider view. Your evidence, digits and the padlock are in the pull-out case file.
