The Black Hand Escape Room
An extortion letter, the wrong address and one hour to make it right. The Black Hand is one of the Five Families escape rooms: a 3D recreation of a real scene from mob history that you walk around as your own mobster, searching for evidence and cracking a four-digit padlock before the clock runs out. This guide covers the real story behind the room, what you'll find inside, and how to get out.

The real story
Il Progresso Italo-Americano was founded in 1880 and became the leading Italian-language newspaper in New York.
The name Black Hand spread through the New York papers in 1903, after a Brooklyn contractor received a letter signed La Mano Nera.
Italian-born detective Joseph Petrosino became the NYPD's chief weapon against the Black Hand. He was shot dead in Palermo in 1909.
Black Hand targets were rarely rich. Grocers, barbers and saloon keepers who had saved a little money were the usual marks.
Black Hand operators often retrieved letters when a delivery went wrong — the alternative was exposure. The substitution method, while crude, was effective when targets were unsophisticated. The NYPD's Italian Squad under Petrosino documented several cases where victims received blank letters following initial threats.
Witness identification of Black Hand operatives was the most common route to prosecution. Victims who had seen their visitors were significantly more likely to cooperate with investigators, particularly after Petrosino's squad established trust with the community.
Setting the scene
Little Italy, 1903. The neighbourhood runs on fear and silence.
A Black Hand extortion letter was delivered this morning — but to the wrong tenement. Number 187 instead of 197. The letter names a sum, a deadline, and a threat specific enough that whoever receives it will know exactly who sent it.
The man at 187 is not one of yours. He's a greengrocer from Palermo who has been here three years and wants nothing to do with any of this. But if he takes that letter to the police — or if another crew finds it first — there will be consequences.
Climb in through the kitchen window off the fire escape, then work through the bedroom to the front room. The front door has a new combination lock on it, and it's the only quiet way out. Find the letter, find the code and get out before the evening mass ends and the street fills up again. Leave no sign you were ever there.
Before you get inside, you make your own way there. Walk down Mulberry Street in 1903, past the macelleria, the barbiere and the banca, to number 187. A green arrow shows you the door.

Three rooms in one
The Black Hand isn't one room, it's three, and you only see the next one once you've earned it. Each has three things to search. Search everything in the room you're in and a door unlocks, a glowing arrow shows you the way through, and the next part of the scene opens up. The clock keeps running the whole time: 5 minutes for all three.
The padlock code is spread across all three, so you can't escape from the kitchen. Move fast in the first room: the last room is where people run out of time.
What you'll find in each room
There are 9 things to search in the Black Hand, three in each room. 4 of them hide a digit of the padlock code, 2 are dead ends put there to waste your time, and the rest fill in the story. The rent ledger, the wine barrel and the church candle stay locked until you've found 3 clues. The letter, the rag and the front door stay locked until you've found 6 clues.
First room: The kitchen

Second room: The bedroom

Third room: The front room

The Black Hand escape room walkthrough
- Take in the room. Drag to look around and walk with the stick or arrow keys. Question marks show everything you can search.
- Clear each room. Search all three things in the kitchen and the way through to the bedroom unlocks. Clear that and you're into the front room. Follow the glowing arrow to the next door.
- Find the four digits. Each piece of evidence that matters gives you one digit, and tells you which position it goes in. Stuck? The hints below point you to the right room, not the answer.
- Ignore the red herrings. Some items look important and aren't. Don't spend the clock on them.
- Open the padlock with the four digits in order, before the 5 minutes run out.
- Make the call. You'll choose how it ends: Take the letter, replace it with a blank page — he'll think it never arrived; Take the letter and go — leave nothing behind; Burn the letter in the apartment — fastest and cleanest. Each ending tells you what really happened.
Hint: The kitchen
One digit of the code is hidden in the kitchen. Read everything you search there to the very last line.
Hint: The bedroom
Two digits of the code are hidden in the bedroom. Read everything you search there to the very last line.
Hint: The front room
One digit of the code is hidden in the front room. Read everything you search there to the very last line.
Tips for escaping
- Read each piece of evidence to the end: the digit is usually in the last line.
- If the clock's getting away from you, a hint costs 25 Mob Coins and an extra minute costs 50.
- Holding a drink or a cigar from the Social Club gives you 20 extra seconds in every room.
- On a phone, turn it sideways for a wider view. Your evidence, digits and the padlock are in the pull-out case file.
