Joe Pesci was Born On This Day in 1943
On this day in 1943 Goodfellas and Casino actor Joe Pesci was born. He hung up his acting boots back in 1999, only making a few small appearances in films since then, but came back with a blast in Martin Scorsese’s The Irishman.
What film and scene do you remember the most from Joe Pesci?
Born on February 9, 1943, in Newark, New Jersey, Joe Pesci would go on to become one of Hollywood's most electrifying portrayals of organised crime, bringing the brutal realities of mob life to the silver screen with an authenticity that few actors have ever matched. Raised in Belleville, New Jersey, Pesci grew up in an environment not entirely disconnected from the world he would later depict, and it was perhaps that gritty, street-level upbringing that gave his performances such raw, unsettling believability.
Pesci's breakthrough into serious acting came with Martin Scorsese's 1980 film Raging Bull, where he played Joey LaMotta alongside Robert De Niro. However, it was his iconic role as Tommy DeVito in Goodfellas (1990) that cemented his legendary status. Based on the real-life Henry Hill and the Lucchese crime family, the film offered audiences an unflinching look at life inside the American mob during its most powerful era. Pesci's portrayal of the volatile, unpredictable DeVito earned him the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor, and his "funny how?" scene remains one of the most quoted and studied moments in cinema history. The real Tommy DeSimone, upon whom the character was based, was allegedly far more terrifying than any screen portrayal could fully capture.
Pesci returned to Scorsese's mob universe in Casino (1995), playing Nicky Santoro, a character inspired by real-life Chicago Outfit enforcer Anthony Spilotro. The film explored the mob's grip on Las Vegas during the 1970s and 1980s, touching on the influence of figures connected to the old Capone organisation and the broader network of American organised crime that had stretched from the streets of New York and Chicago all the way to the Nevada desert. Once again, Pesci delivered a performance of simmering, explosive menace that felt entirely genuine.
After largely stepping away from acting in 1999, Pesci made his triumphant return in Scorsese's The Irishman (2019), playing Russell Bufalino, the real-life Pennsylvania mob boss widely considered one of the most quietly powerful figures in American organised crime during the latter half of the twentieth century. The performance was a revelation — measured, understated, and deeply chilling.
Joe Pesci's legacy extends well beyond awards and critical acclaim. Through his work, he has preserved a visceral, honest record of the American mob era for generations who never witnessed it firsthand, ensuring that the history of organised crime in America is never reduced to mere legend.
